What is Sound Masking?

No, it is not a white noise machine. Sound masking does exactly what it says in the name, it “masks” sound. This is conducted with a series of loudspeakers installed in a specified pattern in the ceiling of your space, distributing a unique background sound. Unwanted, overheard conversations will be a thing of the past. To put it simply, sound masking is the addition of subtle sound to an environment in order to ‘mask’ disruptive noises, such as speech, typing, eating, etc. This additional sound in space, believe it or not, makes the space seem quieter.

How does sound masking work?

Fair question, you may ask.  It sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s true. This is because the added sound reduces the comprehensibility of human speech. When you can’t understand what someone is saying, their words are less distracting — in fact, you probably won’t even notice they are speaking.

Benefits of Sound Masking

Less Distracting-

Sound masking makes surrounding conversations and common noisy distractions a lot less audible. This results in employees feeling less distracted, achieving better concentration, and becoming significantly more productive, especially with demanding tasks. Sound masking systems reduce conversational distractions while increasing concentration, productivity, accuracy, and overall satisfaction.

Sound Masking Increases Confidentiality-

Sound masking can help protect client information, confidential business plans, and sensitive internal/HR information. Choosing sound masking helps mitigate that risk, reassures everyone that their conversation remains private, and reinforces your standards of confidentiality.

Does Sound Masking Actually Work?

Yes! Sound Masking Solutions work by canceling out some speech frequencies while also raising the overall noise floor to limit and aid in productivity and overall speech privacy. The added ambient sound makes human speech hard or impossible to understand, so you can’t hear conversations from 15 or 20 feet away.
