In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, audiovisual (AV) solutions have become an integral part of enhancing worship experiences in churches, synagogues, and temples. These user-friendly, reliable, seamlesssolutions, which range from high-quality sound systems to live streaming capabilities, can significantly enrich the spiritual atmosphere by fostering deeper engagement and connection. Whether it’s amplifying sermons, displaying hymns and scriptures on LED monitors, or enabling remote participation by Zoom live streaming, AV technology offers diverse tools that help create a more immersive and inclusive environment for worshippers and congregants. At CSAV, we understand that your pastors, priests, or rabbis are preparing each week for a smooth service, let their teachings be heard with the help of audiovisual solutions. As religious institutions continue to adapt to modern needs, integrating effective AV solutions can bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, ensuring that services are both meaningful and accessible to all.
At CSAV Systems, we interviewed AV consultant Jonathan Dolan, who has firsthand experience working alongside various denominations of houses of worshipthroughout New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Dolan is a specialist who analyzes the current technology setup at your facilityand proceeds to help design a future system that accommodates all your technology requirementsincluding budget and goals. Over the last 2 years at CSAV Systems, Dolan has worked with numerous types of houses of worshipsuch as temples, synagogues, Roman Catholic churches, Methodist Churches, and much more.Dolan has helped these facilities achieve their AV needs with intuitive, seamless, and reliable technological solutions that enhance operations and user experience.
The Interview:
1) Q- With the new year coming up, are there any AV technologies you think would be beneficial for services to have?
A- Houses of worship can benefit tremendously from the newer features in live streaming systems. Features like audio tracking and integrating interactive tools such as polls and QR codes are great to for engaging remote participants. The use of audio tracking is designed to create a more immersive and realistic sound experience, closely mimicking how we perceive sound in the real world. I have also noticed A.I. has made an appearance in the world of worship. This is seemingly because anyone can use it. Using A.I. to create a content schedule for digital signage or even social media captions can be extremely helpful for the different types of houses of worship. Lastly, AV over IP intercom/paging systems are always important to have in a house of worship in which there are numerous rooms. Making announcements has never been easier.
2) Q- What unique considerations do you take into account when designing AV systems for houses of worship?
A- With each house of worship, we consider many factors when customizing the ideal AV setup. Our team goes into each facility knowing that no two churches or temples are built alike. Some important factors that I will keep note of when designing the AV system is the skillset of the volunteers/staff, the physical space, and most importantly, the architecture of the space. Some clients are looking for a simpler “hit-one-button” approach while others are looking for a full production-style system. While all our systems are user-friendly, it is important to take into consideration how comfortable the client is using technology. Still, our team fully trains our clients on all the equipment we integrate. In a nutshell, we must design something enjoyable that the folks would like to use. Some churches have a dedicated staff, while others have to search for volunteers each week. Depending on the situation at the church/temple/mosque, we custom design each system around the skillset of the staff. Each building is unique and so is the staff using the equipment, so we must design things accordingly. We also train the staff on how to properly use all of the equipment.Next, physical space is something I will always examine. Will there be an entire operating room? Or will the system be out in the open? Lastly, analyzing the architectural design of the house of worship is another essential component when designing an AV system. The architecture directly impacts factors like acoustics, sightlines, and overall functionality. The physical layout and design features of the building — such as the height of the ceilings, the shape of the sanctuary, and theplacement of windows — all influence how sound travels and how visual elements are perceived.
3) Q- How do you ensure that AV solutions are accessible and inclusive for congregants, including those with hearing or visual impairments?
A- Members of all ages and genders should feel welcomein any service they want to attend, regardless of their disability status. For those with hearing or visual impairments, there are many audiovisual solutions that can assist. Speaker coverage is a great tool. Our team will use a diagram of a heat map to map out the room for the ideal placement of speakers, that way the sound is distributed evenly. Assisted listening systems are another great option for members who cannot hear well and already wear a hearing aid. These systems can now connect to user’s phone’s through an app, that way it is discrete. For those who may not be able to see clearly, larger monitors that are evenly distributed in the space have proven to play a crucial role in the engagement and comprehension of service.
4) Q- How are houses of worship utilizing social media these days?
A- Social Media Platforms are still gaining in popularity as many houses of worship aim to bring on more followers. Churches use platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and others for communication, community building, and outreach. They share inspirational messages, event promotions, and engage with followers. However, some are moving away from the larger “well-known” platforms and adopting other solutions that offer better control over content, security, and viewer experience. This in turn leads to some congregations using more interaction features, such as live chat during Zoom meetings, view polls, timers, and even real-time prayer requests.
5) Q- Can you give an example of how houses of worship have embraced modern technologies?
A- At least once a session, churches will ask attendees for any donations. Sometimes they will have a basket that will be passed around or simply an envelope. In today’s age, I have noticed that is it pretty rare for people to have cash on them. Houses of worshipcan get around this by integrating QR codes either on projectors or monitors around the facility. This quick method simplifies the donation process, especially during services or events.
